Probably the only fault with going Fire (with AP [that's Assassin's Promise, an Assassin elite] backup, of course) is that your damage can be terrible against some mobs. There are plenty of monsters in the game that have a billion armour vs. Fire, e.g. Destroyers, Burning Spirits, Flowstones, etc. Many are also immune to burning. There are some monsters that are very vulnerable to Fire, but those that highly resist it are more common.

Aside from that you CAN use Fire Magic, just make sure to have AP support. Without AP, Fire is still usable, but it's largely subpar to Invoke Lightning builds. If you insist on using Fire (up to you, I know someone who insists on using Water) then be sure to have Cracked Armour support on your team - use Weaken Armour, and put it on a hero - and if possible Ebon Battle Standard of Honour. Intensity too is a good skill to have, as is Elemental Lord (you can probably afford the slot).

I personally love running air elementalist in both pve and pvp. Ele's aren't what they used to be but they are definitely viable just don't plan on using much AoE as others have said it causes mobs to scatter... completely useless. We are more single target nukers now, if you even call it nuking.

Not to court controversy, but I find earth AoE to be useful. I happily run a bar with 3 earth AoE in HM. With a decent hero setup and a little bit of experience, you can make it work well.

Also remember, that scattering (even if they can when surrounded by minions) means they are not attacking. And the current AI gives a good chance that they will walk right back into the same or another AoE.

To pop EVAS onto a mob, see them converge and then to hit them with Unsteady Ground is a beautiful thing..........

Scatter is a mixed bag, because it can often pull your heroes out of position when left to their own accord and end up pulling the mob back to you.
